TRIPOLI, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme Council of Presidencies, a coordinating body aimed at unifying national decision-making among Libya's top leadership, was established on Thursday, the Libyan Presidential Council (LPC) and the Government of National Unity (GNU) said in separate statements.
According to the LPC statement, the supreme council was formed during a founding meeting in Tripoli attended by the leaders of the LPC, the GNU, and the High Council of State, an advisory body for the GNU that reviews legislation and advises on policy.
The supreme council will coordinate official positions on political, economic, and security issues, and develop unified policies to preserve Libya's sovereignty and stability, without creating any new structural entity, the statement said.
The GNU statement said the supreme council serves as a coordinating framework and will operate through regular and emergency meetings to enhance institutional harmony.
The establishment came as Libya remains split between the western-based, internationally-recognized, and LPC-supported GNU, and the eastern-based government, backed by the House of Representatives.
So far, the eastern-based government has not commented on the establishment. Enditem
