VIENTIANE, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Laos is moving to strengthen sustainable energy and ease electricity cost pressures on households by providing a subsidy of 8 to 10 million U.S. dollars to reduce power bills for consumers from September to December, supporting families struggling with rising production and energy expenses.
Laos is rolling out a subsidy to lower electricity bills for households using up to 300 kWh a month, aiming to ease pressure on low-income families amid rising living, production and energy costs.
Speaking during the 10th ordinary session of the Lao National Assembly's ninth legislature, Lao Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaythong Kommasith said the short-term subsidy is part of broader efforts to keep electricity affordable while the country grapples with heavy debt and unstable supply. He added that the revised tariffs will be cheaper than electricity rates in neighboring countries.
He added that from 2025 to 2029, electricity tariffs will be separated for agriculture, industry and household consumers to better support production and strengthen the economy.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Vice President of the Lao National Assembly (NA) Sommad Pholsena said that as part of the government's socio-economic development plan, authorities are being urged to intensify inspections of low-efficiency investment projects and prioritize renewable energy development.
The plan also includes supplementing power stations in areas facing shortages to ensure sufficient electricity for households, while adjusting the pricing structure to reflect actual conditions without affecting livelihoods or production.
Laos aims to boost its electricity sector by increasing renewable energy, mainly solar and wind, to 11 percent by 2030, a move to improve efficiency, sustainability and support long-term economic growth.
Speaking at the Carbon Markets and Clean Energy Conference 2025 in late September, director general of the Department of Policy, Planning and Evaluation under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Santisouk Phimphachanh said that combined with stronger transmission systems and new technologies, these efforts will supply power to households and industries, attract investment, create jobs and enhance energy security.
