BERLIN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The German government on Wednesday unveiled its first Space Safety and Security Strategy, a comprehensive plan designed to protect the country's critical infrastructure and strategic interests in the space domain.
In a statement, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the extent to which citizens, companies, and the Bundeswehr rely on space-based services for communication and navigation, warning that any failure or disruption of these services would have serious consequences for national security and everyday life.
The strategy sets out a framework for Germany to better protect and defend itself in space while strengthening overall national resilience. It highlights three main priorities: identifying dangers and threats, promoting international cooperation and order in space, and enhancing deterrence, defense, and resilience.
Pistorius said the Bundeswehr will form "the backbone of the national space security architecture." He added that the Defense Ministry plans to invest about 35 billion euros (40.35 billion U.S. dollars) in the space sector by 2030. (1 euro = 1.15 U.S. dollar) Enditem
