Fixed asset investment in Beijing's administrative sub-center has exceeded 100 billion yuan ($14 billion) for five consecutive years as the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) nears completion, officials announced at a news conference Wednesday.
Zheng Hao, deputy Party secretary and district mayor of Tongzhou, said the district's GDP growth is projected to average more than 6% annually during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, with the rate reaching 10.9% in the first three quarters of this year. The administrative office area is fully operational, municipal agencies have relocated and the Canal Business District is developing into a world-class travel destination.
Since 2016, the sub-center has attracted more than 960 billion yuan in investment, ranking first in construction investment for six years.
The sub-center has also rapidly expanded its urban infrastructure during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Significant projects have been completed, along with key public facilities now in operation. A commercial and entertainment complex is scheduled to open by year's end, Zheng said.
This year, a transportation hub will also begin operations, featuring 1.43 million square meters of industrial space and connections to parks and waterfronts along the Grand Canal.
The sub-center is collaborating with Tianjin and Hebei to promote high-quality development in ecology, transportation, industry and public services. The Chaobai River forest ecological corridor has created an additional 32,000 mu (2,133 hectares) of green space, serving as an ecological buffer for the region, while the North Canal is fully navigable.
To improve its business environment, the sub-center has proposed 107 reform measures focused on lowering costs, accelerating approvals and improving services.
Cultural tourism has emerged as a pillar industry, with total tourism spending in Tongzhou expected to reach 19.7 billion yuan in 2024, up 19.6% from a year earlier. The cultural and entertainment industry's contribution to GDP has grown more than tenfold over four years, rising from 0.5% to 4.7%.
Deputy District Mayor Lin Zhenghang highlighted the expansion of the Grand Canal 5A scenic area and the completion of three cultural facilities, more than 10 hectares of waterfront space and 12 new performance venues.
"We're enhancing customer service to ensure visitors have a comfortable and enjoyable experience," Lin said.
