A mainland spokesperson on Friday said the historic meeting between Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou in 2015 -- the first of its kind between leaders of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait since 1949 -- was a milestone in the history of cross-Strait relations, as Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the meeting.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to a media inquiry concerning the meeting, whose importance has recently been underscored by Ma on social media and highlighted at a seminar addressed by Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, in Taipei.
The meeting a decade ago consolidated the key role of the 1992 Consensus as the political foundation for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, attesting to the fact that Chinese people on both sides of the Strait possess the capability and wisdom to solve their own internal issues, Chen said.
Chen also noted that as long as the 1992 Consensus is upheld and "Taiwan independence" is opposed, then cross-Strait relations can grow peacefully and the interests and well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Strait can be further enhanced.
In stark contrast, any denial of the 1992 Consensus or deviation from the one-China principle in pursuit of a separatist and confrontational agenda will make any cross-Strait consultation and dialogue impossible, thus plunging the Strait into peril and damaging the well-being of Taiwan compatriots, Chen added.
Reunification is the historical trend and the right path, while "Taiwan independence" is a historical countercurrent and a dead end. Only by resolving the cross-Strait political antagonism at an early date and moving toward the goal of complete reunification of the motherland can lasting peace be ensured across the Strait, according to Chen.
Based on the common political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," the mainland is willing to strengthen dialogue, communication, exchanges and interactions with the KMT and other political parties, groups and personages in Taiwan, to jointly promote the development of cross-Strait relations, safeguard peace across the Strait, and to strive for the well-being of all compatriots and rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Chen said.
